As a social science focusing on the production, dispensation, and utilization of goods and services, economics plays an important role in dental practices. This introductory research shares baseline information for the development of future research regarding the impact of practice management processes on the overall fiscal and economic health of dental practices. Germane to this conversation is the proper scheduling of dental procedures to maximize operations which includes a profitable mix of dental procedures and assures the adequate staffing of hygienists. Furthermore, investing in an up-to-date dental management system and well- defined patient-retention policy are also key factors since they can impact long-term patient retention. A discussion of these topics may deepen the understanding of sound management principles and how they link to the overall stability and viability of dental practices. Additionally, this study will identify and focus future research efforts towards the economics of dental practice management.
