In the United States, 4.5 million homes were identified as being in a place of high or extreme risk of wildfire, with more than 2 million in California alone. With 4.1 million acres burned in California from wildfires in just 2020, residents of California assume a higher risk than most other Americans by residing in the Golden State. This paper explores how wildfires impact migration in the state of California. We find that wildfires increase the flow of migrants both in and out of the afflicted area. Surprisingly, the average income of migrants, however, does not appear to change.
